Fitter Deck

Role summary:
A Fitter Deck is a skilled tradesperson who performs repair, fabrication, and modification work on shipboard deck structures, fittings, and associated equipment. The role encompasses basic carpentry, metalwork, stainless steel fabrication, railing and gangway components, deck furniture, and temporary structural supports. The Fitter Deck works under supervision to support safe, efficient deck operations and contributes to dry-dock or port-call projects, routine maintenance, and guest-safety-focused environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Inspect deck spaces, fittings, rails, ladders, gangways, fenders, and non-slip surfaces to identify wear, damage, corrosion, or safety concerns.
  • Perform repairs and refurbishments across decking components and fittings; fabricate or modify small supports, brackets, or components as needed; read and interpret simple drawings, sketches, or work orders.
  • Carry out basic carpentry and metalwork on deck areas (railing repairs, furniture, gangway components, deck hardware, brackets, fasteners); perform minor welding/fabrication where trained and permitted.
  • Assist with temporary structural supports, shoring, and safety safeguards for maintenance or dry-dock activities.
  • Fabricate and install small temporary fixtures or safeguards to support ongoing operations or maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain and repair deck equipment and fittings; replace hardware or fittings as required; assist with ladders, gangways, and walkways.
  • Support with basic corrosion control, cleaning, and surface preparation for deck components; assist with coating or touch-ups as trained.
  • Keep workshop and storerooms organized; manage tools, parts, and stock; assist with inventory control and stores requests.
  • Document all maintenance and repair work in the ship’s work order system or CMMS; update logs and report progress or delays.
  • Ensure safe operation of tools and equipment; follow PPE requirements and shipboard safety rules; participate in drills as required.
  • Coordinate with other departments (Engineering, Hotel Operations, Stores, Safety) to plan access, safety, and execution of tasks.
  • Contribute to dry-dock or port-call projects; assist with measurements, fabrications, or installations under supervision.
  • Support energy efficiency and environmental initiatives where applicable; handle waste and used materials per regulations.

Required qualifications and experience:
  • Vocational training or apprenticeship in carpentry, metalwork, stainless steel fabrication, marine maintenance, or related field; 0-3 years shipboard experience preferred.
  • STCW Basic Safety Training completed; additional deck maintenance or fabrication training is advantageous.
  • Valid medical fitness certificate suitable for seafaring work.
  • Legal right to work onboard; valid passport and any required visas.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written); additional languages are a plus.

Recommended skills and competencies:
  • Solid carpentry and metalworking abilities; basic welding/fabrication skills where permitted.
  • Ability to read simple drawings, sketches, and work orders; interpret measurements and tolerances.
  • Proficiency with common hand and power tools; familiarity with metalworking and woodworking shop practices.
  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills; attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Physical dexterity and stamina; able to work in confined spaces and at heights; safety-conscious with PPE usage.
  • Team player with reliable communication and the ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work within time constraints.

Working conditions:
  • Shipboard environment with work in deck spaces, workshops, and outdoor areas; exposure to weather, salt spray, and marine conditions.
  • Irregular hours, including port calls and potential overtime during peak periods or dry-dock preparations.
  • Travel across itineraries; occasional temporary assignments on other Celebrity ships or yards as required.

Reporting relationships: Reports to Bosun or Deck Supervisor; collaborates with Engineering, Stores, Housekeeping, and Safety teams as required.
