Incinerator Operator
Role summary:
The Incinerator Operator is responsible for the safe and compliant operation of the ship’s waste incineration system. The role involves monitoring combustion processes, feeding waste streams appropriately, maintaining equipment, and ensuring adherence to MARPOL, ISM, SOLAS, and Royal Caribbean environmental standards. The operator helps minimize waste volume while protecting the crew, guests, and the ship’s surroundings.
Key responsibilities:
- Operate the ship’s waste incineration system in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulatory requirements, and the vessel’s Waste Management Plan.
- Monitor and record key incineration parameters (temperature, pressure, fuel usage, feed rate, retention time) and adjust as necessary to maintain efficient and compliant combustion.
- Manage waste streams for incineration: verify proper segregation, preparation, and delivery; ensure prohibited waste is not incinerated.
- Perform pre-operation checks and routine start/stop procedures; inspect incinerator unit, burners, grate, ash removal, and associated equipment.
- Conduct daily/shift safety checks of the incineration area; ensure cleanliness, proper signage, and readiness of emergency shutdown devices.
- Collect, store, and dispose of incinerator ash and other by-products in accordance with regulatory and company procedures.
- Respond to alarms and abnormal readings; execute emergency shutdowns if required and report findings to the supervisor.
- Assist with preventive maintenance tasks and simple repairs within training limits; coordinate with maintenance teams for more complex work.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of incinerator operations, waste streams, and maintenance actions in the ship’s CMMS or logbook.
- Ensure compliance with MARPOL Annex V and VI, port state control requirements, and environmental standards; participate in internal and external audits and inspections as needed.
- Promote safe working practices; use appropriate PPE; observe confined-space safety protocols and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Coordinate with Stores, Environmental Compliance, and Engineering for consumables and waste supplies; support waste management initiatives and efficiency programs.
- Provide input and mentorship to junior technicians and on-the-job training as appropriate.
Required qualifications and experience:
- STCW Basic Safety Training completed; additional engine-room or waste-management training (where available) is advantageous.
- Relevant maritime engineering or mechanical trades background (apprenticeship, diploma, or equivalent hands-on experience); typically 0-3 years of shipboard experience in an engine room or waste management role.
- Valid medical fitness certificate suitable for seafaring work.
- Legal right to work onboard; valid passport and any required visas.
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written); additional languages are a plus.
Recommended skills and competencies:
- Knowledge of waste incineration processes, combustion control, and emissions considerations.
- Familiarity with MARPOL requirements, shipboard waste management, and environmental policies.
- Strong mechanical aptitude; ability to read manuals, diagrams, and maintenance instructions.
- Analytical mindset with good problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Attention to safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship.
- Ability to work in a team, follow strict procedures, and communicate effectively under pressure.
Working conditions:
- Primarily a shipboard engine room environment; exposure to heat, fumes, steam, noise, and confined spaces.
- Shift work, including nights and port calls; potential for longer duty periods during certain itineraries or dry-dock work.
- Travel across itineraries; occasional shipyard or installation work as required.
- May involve handling hot surfaces, heavy equipment, and hazardous waste materials; adherence to safety and environmental regulations is essential.
Reporting relationships: Reports to Chief Engineer or Engine Supervisor; collaborates with Environmental Compliance, Safety & Security, Stores, and Deck/Housekeeping as required.
