An A/B Sailor keeps a safe lookout and reports unusual observations to the Watchkeeping Officer. You must be able to take the wheel whenever necessary, following helm orders from the Master, Watchkeeping Officer, or Pilot. It is important that you are observant and alert in order to prevent accidents from happening, and qualified to act independently if required. You will be expected to use appropriate safety and protection equipment; follow instructions from the Bosun; and support the Bosun and Deck Officers. Candidates must have: experience as a Sailor OS; a Deck Watchkeeping certificate; and familiarity with bridge procedures like hand steering, lookout, acknowledging of fire alarms, and hand-held radio communication.
