Fitter Engine

Role summary:
A Fitter Engine is an engine department tradesperson who performs repair, fabrication, and modification work on shipboard propulsion and auxiliary machinery. The role covers basic carpentry and metalwork as needed, piping and valve repairs, simple electrical tasks within training limits, and routine maintenance to support safe, efficient engine operations. The Fitter Engine works under supervision and develops skills toward higher-rated technical positions in line with STCW requirements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Inspect engine room equipment, propulsion and auxiliary systems, piping, fittings, and deck/engine spaces to identify wear, damage, leaks, corrosion, or safety concerns.
  • Perform repairs and refurbishments across trades within trained limits (carpentry, basic metalwork, minor welding/fabrication, basic electrical and plumbing tasks); fabricate or modify small components and supports as needed; read and interpret simple drawings, sketches, or work orders.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance tasks (cleaning, grinding, painting, surface preparation, caulking, sealing, gasket replacement) and minor installations.
  • Maintain and repair engine room fittings, deck machinery supports, piping supports, brackets, and small structural components; replace fasteners and fittings as required.
  • Aid in basic HVAC/plumbing tasks (valve work, gasket reseals, leak checks) and assist with water supply, drainage, ballast-related maintenance as trained.
  • Support temporary structural safeguards, shoring, or safety measures for maintenance or dry-dock activities.
  • Keep workshop organized; manage tools, spare parts, and stock; assist with inventory control and stores requests.
  • Document all maintenance and repair work in the ship’s work order system or CMMS; update logs and report progress or delays.
  • Ensure safe operation of tools and equipment; follow PPE requirements and shipboard safety rules; participate in drills and safety-related activities.
  • Coordinate with other departments (Engineering, Deck, Stores, Environmental) to plan access, safety, and execution of tasks.
  • Contribute to dry-dock or port-call projects as required; assist with measurements, fabrications, or installations under supervision.
  • Support energy efficiency and environmental initiatives where applicable; handle waste and used materials per regulations.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to junior technicians or assistants as needed.

Required qualifications and experience:
  • STCW Basic Safety Training completed; additional engine-room, mechanical, or fabrication training is advantageous.
  •  Relevant diploma, apprenticeship, or practical experience in marine engineering, mechanical trades, or equivalent hands-on programs; typically 0-3 years shipboard experience preferred.
  • Valid medical fitness certificate suitable for seafaring work.
  • Legal right to work onboard; valid passport and any required visas.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written); additional languages are a plus.

Recommended skills and competencies:
  • Broad repair capabilities across multiple trades; ability to read simple drawings and work orders.
  • Proficiency with common hand and power tools; basic welding or fabrication knowledge is a plus.
  • Familiarity with piping systems, valves, flanges, mechanical seals, and basic instrumentation.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities; attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Physical dexterity and stamina; able to work in confined spaces, heat, and noisy environments; safety-conscious with PPE usage.
  • Team player with reliable communication and the ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work within time constraints.

Working conditions:
  • Primarily in the engine room and adjacent spaces; exposure to heat, oil, fumes, steam, noise, and confined spaces.
  • Shift work, including watches 24/7; potential for long hours during port calls, sea passages, or dry-dock periods.
  • Travel across itineraries; occasional temporary assignments on other Celebrity ships or yards as required.

Reporting relationships: Reports to 4th Engineer (Junior/Assistant Engineer) or designated Engine Supervisor; collaborates with other engineers, oilers, fitters, electricians, and ship staff as required.
